“Vegas Dave” is at it again – to the tune of $1 million on a favored UFC champ.
Dave Oancea – “Vegas Dave” – said on his Instagram account he will place a $1 million wager on UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate (18-5 MMA, 5-2 UFC) for her UFC 200 title defense against Amanda Nunes (12-4 MMA, 5-1 UFC).
UFC 200 takes place July 9 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card, including Tate vs. Nunes, airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. The pay-per-view broadcast – which features a main event between light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier and heated ex-champ rival Jon Jones, plus the return of Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt, and an interim featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar, not to mention Tate-Nunes – is expected to make a run at the UFC’s biggest buyrate in history.
“1 million dollars on @mieshatate to win at UFC 200. This will be the biggest wager in sports betting history to be shown on paper. I have found a place that has approved this wager. No it’s not a vegas sports book. I will post the ticket like I always do this time before the fight. The last UFCs I have predicted Holm over Rousey, Mcgregor over Aldo, Tate over Holm, Bisping over Rockhold, and now 7 figures on Tate to retain her belt at UFC 200. We will have floor seats for this event to watch this live. #vegasdave #itsvegasdave #sportsbetting #UFC #ufc200 #mieshatate”
Oancea came to prominence in the MMA world after an appearance on MMAjunkie Radio this past fall. After winning $2.5 million on a preseason futures bet that the Kansas City Royals would win the World Series, Oancea appeared on MMAjunkie Radio to talk about his big score.
While on the show, hosts “Gorgeous” George Garcia and Brian “Goze” Garcia talked to him about wagering on MMA – and the upcoming Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm title fight at UFC 193. When he learned of the long odds against Holm, Oancea said he’d drop $10,000 on her just “for fun.” He said he would bet on the previously untouchable Rousey to lose until she eventually did.
“I’ll put $10,000 on her every time against her and just keep doubling up, because eventually she’s going to lose – that’s my philosophy,” he said on the show. “It just takes one lucky punch. I’ll put $10,000 on her if they let me do it. I’ve got balls.”
Well, Rousey did lose to Holm at UFC 193, and Oancea pocketed $250,000 on a $20,000 bet.
He later appeared on MMAjunkie Radio again – and was in the studio in Las Vegas with Miesha Tate.
Then in March, when Holm put her new title on the line for the first time against Tate, Oancea went big on “Cupcake.” He bet $77,000 on the challenger to become the new champ – and he won again, picking up $223,000 thanks to Tate’s submission winin the UFC 196 co-main event.
It’s unclear what odds Oancea will get when he places his $1 million wager on Tate for next month’s fight. Most online sports books currently have her as a -250 favorite. If she wins, Oancea’s seven-figure wager would net him a profit of $400,000 if he gets his ticket at -250.
